Hwaseong Fortress was built by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty. Construction took place between 1794 and 1796. The king had two main reasons for building the fortress. First, he wanted to relocate the tomb of his father, Prince Sado, who had been tragically executed years earlier. Second, he envisioned Suwon as a new political and economic center.
The fortress is massive, with walls that stretch for nearly 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) and encloses an area of 1.3 square kilometers (0.5 square miles). The walls are made of stone and brick and are punctuated by four gates, observation posts, and artillery towers.
