The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) has been a fixture in personality assessment for decades. Developed by Katherine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers, it categorizes individuals into 16 personality types. Four major areas are the basis of these 16 classifications.
- Introversion (I) vs. extroversion (E)
- Intuition (N) vs. sensation (S)
- Thinking (T) vs. feeling (F)
- Judgment (J) vs. perception (P).
The test involves 93 questions to analyze your personality in the four areas. Each area has two subtypes so the mix and match results in 16 personality types.

Korea and Love for Personality Tests & MBTI
MBTI is not the first personality test that is trending in South Korea.
Some time back, personality and characteristics based on blood type. Each blood group represented a certain set of characteristics. Like, people with blood type A are conscientious, organized, and rule-followers; blood group B individuals are characterized as independent, creative, and flexible. These descriptions are often vague and can apply to almost anyone, appealing to the Barnum Effect (the tendency to find vague personality descriptions highly accurate).
While not taken as seriously as before, blood type personality theories remain a topic of conversation in Korea. It’s not uncommon to hear people describe themselves or others based on their blood type.
While MBTI is similar but it is a lot more sophisticated. While it shouldn’t be used for definitive personality assessments, the MBTI can be a springboard for self-discovery. It can prompt reflection on your preferences and how they influence your interactions with the world.
Many other personality tests exist and all it shows is that Koreans are curious people by nature and they like to categorize and see how they appear to others. If you become friends with any locals on your trip to South Korea, you might get to know more about these personality types and tests.
It may seem categorical and a way of putting people into boxes, it is a good conversation starter. Especially in a new country and where you don’t know people!
