Korean Government Changes Closing Schedule for Supermarkets Opening Hours in Seoul

South Korean government is changing the mandatory closure of supermarkets in central Seoul, so if you’re planning on visiting this area in the near future, you may want to pay attention.

Starting November 2024, most of the prominent supermarkets located in the central district of Jung in Seoul will be changing their opening hours, with a permanent closing schedule on Wednesdays instead of Sundays. Reports mentioned that this decision was due to the increasing number of foreign tourists in this area.

After all, there are a number of tourist attractions you can actually visit in central Seoul. The Jung district itself houses the famous Myeongdong Cathedral, Deoksu Palace, and Seoul Plaza. Meanwhile, the Jongno district close to it also features Gyeongbok Palace and Cheong Wa Dae.

Previously, the Korean government mandated that most large supermarkets in Seoul close their business on Sundays every other week. This policy was reportedly made to support the small and developing businesses in the area.

But now, per new regulations from the Korean government, don’t be so surprised because most large supermarkets in Seoul will change their opening hours and close their business on Wednesdays instead.

Not only that, but this change does not only apply to central Seoul. In fact, Korean supermarkets in some other areas have also implemented the change in opening hours. Previously, supermarkets in other Korean districts and areas have also changed their closing schedule to Wednesdays, including Seocho and Dongdaemun Districts in Seoul, as well as other cities: Busan, Daegu, and Cheongju.
