Spring is a vibrant time in South Korea because the cherry blossom trees bloom. It’s an unforgettable sight that you won’t want to miss out on! Check out these details about the cherry blossom forecast for 2023 in South Korea.

The blooming time of cherry blossoms in Seoul and other regions of South Korea varies depending on the elevation and latitude. In general, the blooming period ranges from early March to late April. The peak bloom time usually occurs around two weeks later than in Japan.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the following is a list of the predicted peak bloom dates for cherry blossoms in South Korea’s major cities.

Jeju: March 20

Jinhae: March 21

Hwagae: March 21

Gwangju: March 22

Jeonju: March 22

Busan: March 24

Gyeongju: March 24

Daegu: March 26

Daejeon: March 27

Seoul: March 28

Gangneung: March 31

Incheon: April 3

Chuncheon: April 6

Types of Cherry Blossoms in Korea

Let’s discuss the many types of cherry blossoms in South Korea. There are minor variations between these and the cherry blossom trees that bloom first, which is crucial to know if you intend to explore Korea’s cherry blossom landscape.

Yoshino Cherry Blossom

The Yoshino Cherry Blossom is the most common cherry blossom in South Korea. It blooms earlier than other types, usually around late March to early April. There are five petals on the pale pink flowers of the tree that can grow up to 15 meters tall.

King Cherry Blossoms

They are said to have originated on Jeju Island. But some people in Korea believe they’re the same as Yoshino trees. The blooms on this tree are larger and pinker in hue. Overall, the King cherry trees are somewhat rarer and bloom a few weeks later than the Yoshino trees, which bloom between early to mid-April and a bit later.

Maehwa Blossoms

Also called the plum blossom, this flower is part of the rose family. They have a subtle, sweet fragrance and usually bloom around late March to early April.

Azaleas Blossoms

These blooms come in various colors: white, pink, and red. They typically bloom between early April and mid-May and can reach a height of three meters.

Next, let’s discuss Korea’s cherry blossom forecast in more detail. Overall, the sequence of blooming usually goes like this:

  • Maehwa (and Sansuyu)
  • Azaleas (they last longer)
  • Yoshino Cherry Blossoms
  • King Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossoms in Korea first appear in the south and then advance northward. So you may visit the cherry blossoms in Jinhae, Busan, Ulsan, Pohang, and Gwangju before moving on to Seoul for the ultimate cherry blossom experience.

When is the Best Time to See Cherry Blossoms in Seoul?

The first week of April is when the cherry blossom peak in Seoul generally occurs, although this varies from year to year. The Korean government expects cherry blossoms in Seoul to begin on March 28, 2023. People usually visit Yeouido Park for the cherry blossom festival during this time.

The blooming period is relatively short, only lasting about two weeks. So if you’re planning a trip to see the cherry blossoms in Korea, make sure to plan your trip accordingly!
