Types of Cherry Blossoms in Korea

Let’s discuss the many types of cherry blossoms in South Korea. There are minor variations between these and the cherry blossom trees that bloom first, which is crucial to know if you intend to explore Korea’s cherry blossom landscape.

Yoshino Cherry Blossom

The Yoshino Cherry Blossom is the most common cherry blossom in South Korea. It blooms earlier than other types, usually around late March to early April. There are five petals on the pale pink flowers of the tree that can grow up to 15 meters tall.

King Cherry Blossoms

They are said to have originated on Jeju Island. But some people in Korea believe they’re the same as Yoshino trees. The blooms on this tree are larger and pinker in hue. Overall, the King cherry trees are somewhat rarer and bloom a few weeks later than the Yoshino trees, which bloom between early to mid-April and a bit later.

Next, let’s discuss Korea’s cherry blossom forecast in more detail. Overall, the sequence of blooming usually goes like this:

  • Maehwa (and Sansuyu)
  • Azaleas (they last longer)
  • Yoshino Cherry Blossoms
  • King Cherry Blossoms

Cherry blossoms in Korea first appear in the south and then advance northward. So you may visit the cherry blossoms in Jinhae, Busan, Ulsan, Pohang, and Gwangju before moving on to Seoul for the ultimate cherry blossom experience.

When is the Best Time to See Cherry Blossoms in Seoul?

The first week of April is when the cherry blossom peak in Seoul generally occurs, although this varies from year to year. The Korean government expects cherry blossoms in Seoul to begin on March 28, 2023. People usually visit Yeouido Park for the cherry blossom festival during this time.

The blooming period is relatively short, only lasting about two weeks. So if you’re planning a trip to see the cherry blossoms in Korea, make sure to plan your trip accordingly!
