But, what is Choncance?

Choncance is an upcoming trend in South Korea, especially among the country’s younger generations. Choncance is an amalgamation of “chon“, a Korean word for rural area and “vacance“, a French one for vacation. It is a unique and refreshing way to escape the confines of the city and its bustling streets. It’s when people from cities tired of the daily hubbub go to the countryside for some peace.

A traditional experience

It’s not just the location which changes, it’s a whole experience. For example, instead of eating in a restaurant, you can take part in cooking your food. You could be grilling a pork belly in a traditional Korean mud house or a countryside residence. It’s totally different from sitting at a table and waiting to be served.

Peaceful retreat

The countryside experience is completely relaxing as you are by the Mother Nature. Usually, these accommodations are nestled among mountains, grasslands, or other secluded spots that offer an abundance of peace and quiet.

The retreats almost feel like a healing retreat as you can get away from the daily stresses of life and restore your balance.

Choncance spots in and near Seoul

Well, if you are planning a holiday in Korea, why not try this unique experience? There are many choncance spots in and around Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Even AirBnB also offers Choncance options like Modern Choncance Irestay and Danggyeonggol Recreation Pension Daffodil Room.

Thanks Halmae, a Youth Village project

Thanks Halmae, a charming youth village located in Hamyang, South Gyeongsang Province, offers a unique opportunity to experience rural life. This program, run by three young hosts, was selected as a Youth Village in 2022 and has since attracted numerous visitors. With the theme “Delicious stories of country old ladies (grandmothers) and city girls,” Thanks Halmae provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Guests have the opportunity to stay in grandmother-themed accommodations and engage in various village activities.

One of the highlights of staying at Thanks Halmae is the daily tradition of sharing breakfast together at 8 a.m. The hosts prepare delicious meals using fresh, locally sourced ingredients from the grandmother’s garden. Even those who typically skip breakfast often find themselves eagerly finishing their bowls.

Beyond the delicious meals, Thanks Halmae offers opportunities to experience authentic village life. Guests can relax and enjoy the serene surroundings, read books about the village, or write in the guestbook. They can also participate in village activities, such as weeding and drying chili peppers, gaining valuable insights into rural life.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or a chance to connect with nature, Thanks Halmae offers a memorable experience. Immerse yourself in the beauty of the countryside, savor delicious home-cooked meals, and create lasting memories.
