Trout is a salmon family member that comes back to Pyeongchang every winter. It lives in clean and cold waters, and it represents the clean and beautiful environment of Pyeongchang. Every winter, Pyeongchang’s rivers freeze over, and the Pyeongchang Trout Festival attracts many visitors who are willing to brave the cold to enjoy the event. The festival mostly involves ice fishing through small holes drilled in the ice. The fishing goes along with other fun activities like tent camping at the fishing spot and barehand fishing. The festival also has other winter activities like ice sledding, so there’s something for everyone, kids and adults alike.

The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival is a winter wonderland. It happens when the Hwacheoncheon Stream freezes over, and you can go ice fishing. You can catch sancheoneo (cherry salmon), called the “Queen of the Valley,” by drilling holes in the ice and then grilling or having it prepared at the raw fish center. Besides ice fishing, there’s lure and barehand fishing, and fun activities like sledding, bobsledding, and ice soccer. It’s a hit with people of all ages, drawing over a million visitors each year. It is one of the most popular winter festivals in Korea for locals and tourists alike.
