Jinhae boasts a rich collection of cherry blossom species, from the celebrated Yoshino cherries to native Korean varieties, each adding its hue to the city’s colorful tapestry. The spectacle of these trees in their full splendor serves as a poignant reminder of life’s ephemeral beauty, urging those who come to see them to live in the moment and cherish the present.

Why is Jinhae so famous for its cherry blossoms?

Jinhae is known for its Yoshino cherry trees, which were originally planted by the Japanese during their occupation. Since Jinhae was a crucial port for the Japanese navy, they had a strong presence there, resulting in a lot of cherry trees compared to other coastal areas.

The Japanese Navy doesn’t have a base in Korea, but the city has become the main home for the Republic of Korea Navy. While the festival is famous for cherry blossoms, it’s actually a celebration of the Korean military and Admiral Yi Sun Shin, who’s up there with King Sejong in Korean history. The official name is “진해궁항제,” which means Jinhae Naval Base Festival! The festival lasts for about a week and has lots of different events and performances around Jinhae, many of which are about Korea’s military.
