Journey into KABUKI – Appreciation and Experience

The event theme, “Kabuki for Everyone,” is perfect for introducing newcomers to Kabuki, and offer a thrilling experience to forever fans. Whether you are just fascinated by Japan’s theatrical traditions or are eager to get a better understanding of the culture, this program is going to be both educational and entertaining.

The event, hosted at Minamiza Theatre, will feature interactive exhibits and workshops where guests can get hands-on with Kabuki props, musical instruments, and costumes. With these unique experiences, you will get access to rare behind-the-scenes access to the intricate world of Kabuki.

Tsukeuchi workshop is one of the exclusives that you can look forward to where you’ll get to explore the fascinating sound effects that bring Kabuki performances to life. You’ll also have the chance to try on traditional costumes in the Kabuki Costume Wearing Experience and view an exhibition of Kabuki props.

Understanding Kabuki: An Introduction

The event will start with an Introduction to KABUKI led by renowned Kabuki actors Kataoka Senjirō and Nakamura Umeno, to make Kabuki more accessible. This segment will offer insight into Kabuki’s history and art, offering valuable context for the performance. English interpretation will be available, making it easy for international guests to follow along. Plus, some lucky audience members might even be invited on stage to participate in the fun!

The Highlight: Dance Drama “Shōjō”

The centerpiece of the event is the lively dance drama Shōjō, a playful story about a saké-loving spirit. The spirit rewards a saké seller with a magical jar that never runs dry. The energetic, tipsy dance will bring smiles to the audience. An English audio guide will be available, ensuring that the non-Japanese speakers can fully appreciate the humor and artistry of the performance. This event is a perfect blend of cultural exploration and entertainment, offering a glimpse into the world of Kabuki that both new and seasoned fans will enjoy.

About the Minamiza Theatre

Minamiza Theatre, in Kyoto, is the birthplace of Kabuki. It stands as the last remaining theater preserving the legacy of the seven officially sanctioned “yagura” theaters established along the Shijo Riverbank during the Genna era.

Managed by Shochiku Co., Ltd. since 1906, the theater has hosted a variety of performances, with Kabuki taking center stage.

Today, Minamiza is recognized as one of Japan’s most important cultural hubs. In 1996, it became Kyoto’s first Registered Tangible Cultural Property, and after seismic reinforcements, it reopened in November 2018, continuing its dedication to preserving Japan’s cultural heritage.
