“The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.”
Theodore Roosevelt
The quote from Theodore Roosevelt above resonates well with what The Gyeonggi Province Museum does. 2025 Museum Film Festival (Museum CineFest) in Gyeonggi Province aims to educate the public about Korean history and culture, thus preparing them for the future.

2025 Museum CineFest in the Gyeonggi Province
The Museum CineFest, running from 11- 26 January 2025, features various programs, such as movie screenings, and talks with curators, and filmmakers. Symposiums will also be part of the programs, participated by museum and film industry experts.
Film Screenings at CineFest
The 1st movie screening on the opening of the CineFest was “The Face Reader“ (2013), starring Song Kang-ho as Nae-gyeong, a well-known physiognomist during the Joseon dynasty. The story revolves around political intrigues and the struggles of Nae-gyeong. He navigates the treacherous world of the royal court while trying to establish a better future.
The film explores themes of power, deception, and human intuition.Other films will also be featured, such as “The Fatal Encounter” (2014), “The King and the Clown”(2005), “Assassination” (2015), “The Book of Fish” (2021), “Mal-Mo-E: The Secret Mission” (2019), “Hwang Jin Yi” (2007), and “Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet” (2016). This movie screening will be held every weekend until 26 January 2025.
Museum’s Artifact Collection Featured in CineFest
As mentioned, The CineFest aims to bridge historical Korean films with the museum’s artifact collection. Hence, during the screening, the museum will also feature relics depicted in movies alongside actual artifacts on display. Some of the Gyeonggi Province Museum’s collections accompanying the film screenings are “Portrait of Song Siyeol” and “Chaekgado.”
Song Siyeol was a prominent scholar and politician during the Joseon Dynasty. His portrait represents the Confucian ideals and societal structures of that era. Displaying his portrait alongside “The Face Reader” can provide viewers with a visual connection to the historical figures and themes depicted in the film, particularly those related to politics and social hierarchy.
The 18th-century “Chaekgado“ by artist Jan Han-Jong will be displayed alongside “The Fatal Encounter” film. “Chaekgado” is a style of Korean painting that typically features books, scholar’s tools, and other symbolic objects associated with knowledge and wisdom, reflecting the Confucian values prominent in Joseon society. Meanwhile, “The Fatal Encounter” (2014), starring Hyun Bin as King Jeongjo, is a film based on a real-life assassination attempt on King Jeongjo.
By displaying the “Chaekgado,” the museum helps viewers explore the social and political dynamics of the time, particularly how scholarship and governance intertwined, as represented in the artwork and the film’s narrative.
