Remarkably, some of these charming dabangs continue to thrive in Seoul today.

Taegeukdang (1946)

Taegeukdang, Seoul’s oldest and most iconic bakery, opened its doors in 1946. It was just a year after Korea gained independence from Japan’s 35-year occupation. Located near Namsan Mountain, Taegeukdang is a charmingly old-fashioned bakery that makes for a perfect stop after a stroll in Seoul’s largest park. Recognizable by its Chinese characters on the front, this quaint establishment offers a variety of beverages.

When visiting this establishment, be sure to indulge in their famous homemade red bean buns, milk bread, and Monaka ice cream. The Monaka ice cream comes in two delightful variations: one with original milk ice cream sandwiched in a waffle and the other with a layer of glutinous rice cake.

An interesting fact about the Taegeukdang was that its delicacies appeared in the popular Kdrama “Reply 1988.” If you’re a fan of pastries, you definitely shouldn’t miss the opportunity to try the delicious treats they offer. A visit to this cafe and bakery is truly worth it, as it serves mouthwatering Korean-style bread and pastries that perfectly complement a glass of milk, iced coffee, or hot coffee.

Hakrim, a quaint coffee shop, occupies a charming brick building near Seoul National University’s Yeongeon Campus. It has a unique name, meaning “Forest of Learning.” As soon as you enter, the nostalgic music and well-preserved interior transport you back in time. The vintage atmosphere continues with vintage LP records, black and white photos of famous musicians, and cozy booth tables. Hakrim even appeared in popular K-dramas like “My Love from the Star.”

With their special roasting and brewing techniques, the taste of Hakrim’s coffees is timeless. Its hand-drip coffee attracts a constant flow of customers. Many come specifically for their renowned Vienna coffee or espresso con panna. In addition to their coffee offerings, Hakrim also serves a selection of teas, alcoholic beverages, and delectable cheesecake.

This vintage cafe is famous for its Vienna coffee and sanghwatang, traditional Korean tea. The vintage café serves these delightful beverages in delicate cups, adding an elegant touch to the experience.

Jidaebang, a historic teahouse in Insadong, has delighted customers for decades. The name “Jidaebang” originates from the concept of a room where monks rest their gear. Lee Jong-gook, the passionate owner and third-generation heir, personally roasts tea leaves. At Jidaebang, indulge in various teas and discover the art of drinking traditional Korean teas, including exquisite chrysanthemum tea.

Eulji Coffee shop, on the second floor of Eulji Myeonok, is a hidden gem among surrounding hardware stores. Its menu board, resembling a board game, uses red chips for coffee and green chips for ssanghwacha. During winter, customers come for the particular herbal tea topped with egg yolk and nuts; a tradition served only in old dabang. The shop evokes nostalgia from the pre-WWII era when dabang emerged, catering to elites with instant coffee. During the 1960-1980 period, dabang thrived and attracted more visitors.

After a photo shoot by BTS, Eulji dabang gained attention, becoming a shrine with its pink sign. With a cheerful interior and a mix of elderly and BTS fans, the shop is a unique blend of worlds. House specialty: cold instant coffee, a simple yet sweet and refreshing choice. Other options are hot ginger tea, ginseng tea, jujube tea, and omija juice.

  • Address: 04550 2F, 124-1 Eulji-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul
  • Telephone: +82-2-2272-1886
  • Operating hours: 06:00 – 21:30

In conclusion, Seoul’s vintage cafes are a testament to the city’s rich culture and historical heritage. Whether you’re a coffee/tea lover, a history buff, or someone looking for a unique experience, these cafes promise to transport you back in time. So, let your senses be delighted as you sip on a cup of coffee/tea and uncover the retro charm of must-visit vintage cafes in Seoul.
