Seoul Travel Made Easy with the Trip PASS App

On December 11, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced the expansion of its Trip PASS application services. The expansion aims to cater to the needs of international tourists and elevate their overall travel experience in Seoul. This significant development is expected to impact the city’s tourism industry positively.

With the Trip PASS app, tourists can now efficiently utilize their mobile passports for identification purposes, eliminating the need for physical documents. Additionally, the app provides the convenience of immediate tax refunds, further streamlining the process for these travelers at participating stores. With these new features, international tourists can enjoy a seamless and efficient journey during their time in Seoul.

Lordsystem, the Trip PASS app developer, introduced South Korea’s first mobile passport service through a competition in 2019. The company’s innovative work was acknowledged and rewarded with two innovation awards at CES 2024 for the latest advancements in the Trip PASS service.

Mobile Debit Cards for Seamless Travel Payments

The Seoul Trip PASS app offers more than just mobile passports. Foreign tourists can now also get a mobile debit card through the app. This mobile debit card is easy to top up using their credit cards. With this versatile debit card, tourists can enjoy smooth payments for public transit options like subways, buses, and taxis.

Moreover, tourists can purchase items using a Trip PASS mobile debit card at participating stores. This additional feature makes navigation and payment for activities in Seoul even more convenient.

Both the mobile debit cards and the passports are issued in the form of a QR code within the app. This design ensures that users can easily access and use their cards and passports, providing a seamless and straightforward experience.

Availability and Usage

Android users can now download the updated Trip PASS app. As for iPhone users, the service will be available starting from late January 2024.

The Trip PASS application currently supports five languages: Korean, Japanese, English, simplified Chinese, and traditional Chinese. This multi-language support allows users from different countries to use the app comfortably.

In the first half of 2024, they will expand the Trip PASS application’s language support to include Vietnamese and Thai languages. Moreover, tourists from China can easily access the functions of the Trip PASS application through WeChat’s Trip PASS feature. They do not need to download Trip PASS separately, as payment can be made using WeChat Pay. The Trip PASS application provides a convenient and seamless experience for Chinese travelers.

Expansion of Locations

Currently, various outlets around the city, including CU convenience stores and Lotte Duty-Free locations, accept mobile debit cards. These locations also offer tax refunds. Starting from the first half of 2024, Hyundai Duty-Free Shops, Shinsegae Duty-Free stores, and GS25 convenience stores will begin accepting mobile debit cards. This expansion will allow users to use their mobile debit cards at these additional locations conveniently.

Seoul Travel Trip PASS App: Streamlining Payments from Tourists and Empowering Merchants

Trip PASS is part of Seoul’s strategic plans to attract 30 million international tourists by 2026. The app aims to facilitate seamless payment acceptance from international tourists to merchants in Seoul. The app simplifies the payment process, significantly enhancing efficiency and convenience for both merchants and tourists.

With the app, merchants in Seoul can easily and seamlessly accept payments from international tourists by scanning the QR codes issued in the app. This app eliminates the need for merchants to invest in separate purchases of passport readers or payment terminals for overseas credit cards. This strategic move aims to make Seoul a more tourist-friendly destination. By offering a streamlined payment experience, the app aims to drive tourism growth and increase the city’s attractiveness to international visitors.

TABA

Earlier this month, the Seoul Metropolitan Government launched Taba, a taxi-hailing app designed for overseas visitors. Additionally, Seoul Metro, the leading operator of Seoul’s subway system, introduced real-time, interactive translation services through AI-powered screens at Line No. 4’s Myeongdong Station. These services provide translations from Korean to 12 languages. By April, the plan is to expand this feature to five other subway stations in the city, further enhancing convenience for international travelers in Seoul.
