Martial Law 2024 Officially Lifted: South Korea Daily Life Returns to Normal

Just as you’re getting ready for an exciting year-end vacation to South Korea, the country’s president suddenly issued martial law in December 2024. Everything you see on the news is chaos, and it makes you think twice about whether you should depart on your trip.

Even when the 2024 martial law was lifted after merely 6 hours, everything seemed tense and concerning in South Korea. And you just can’t help but refreshing the front page of the news section instead of browsing for exciting places to spend time this winter.

We know, we understand. For someone who’s planning to travel to the country, everything seems uncertain right now. To you, South Korea may look like it’s in massive political tension even after the 2024 martial law has been lifted.

But actually, not everything is as scary as it is on the news.

In fact, daily life in South Korea has been nothing but normal since the day the 2024 martial law was lifted, and all travelers continue having a blast in the country.

Culture Ministry Guarantees the Safety of Travelers in South Korea

As an attempt to assure the public and all enthusiastic travelers as you are, the Korean Culture Ministry also guaranteed the safety of the country’s tourism activities.

On December 9, Korean Minister of Culture Yoo In Chon personally delivered the promise during his speech at a tourism business forum in Seoul. The minister guaranteed that he would be working with his utmost effort to ensure travelers feel safe and secure, especially after last week’s martial law attempt by President Yoon Suk Yeol and the ongoing political turmoil.

“The government will do its utmost for the safety and convenience of all visitors (to the country).”

Similarly, Vice Culture Minister Jang Mi Ran also emphasized that South Koreans are going about their daily lives as usual. She also stated that major tourist destinations have remained fully operational without a glitch.

This statement is the second attempt by the Korean Culture Ministry to assure everyone that the country is perfectly safe and secure to travel in right now.

Previously, they had sent diplomatic notes to foreign embassies, making sure that all travelers would remain safe and comfortable traveling in the country.

“Daily life in South Korea remains unchanged. Travel and economic activities are unaffected, and travel advisories are unnecessary.”

No Major Changes After 2024 Martial Law Lifted

Now, are you convinced yet?

In addition to the Korean Culture Ministry, some of the prominent hotel representatives testified that everything was just going normal. After the 2024 martial law was lifted, all travel plans in South Korea have been running as usual and travelers continue exploring this beautiful nation.

Korea Herald reported that even on the day the 2024 martial law occurred and was lifted, hotel representatives revealed no significant changes in their operations.

“We haven’t noticed any major changes on Tuesday or Wednesday, and no guests have expressed serious worries about the martial law declaration,” a Park Hyatt Seoul official told The Korea Herald on Wednesday.

A representative from Sofitel Ambassador Seoul Hotel shared a similar update as well, saying there haven’t been any sudden cancellations or schedule changes. “Everything has been running smoothly here,” the official added.

Korea Tour Net, a local travel agency that works with international visitors, reported no cancellations as of Wednesday. “Of course, we’re keeping an eye on things. Political situations can sometimes affect tourism, so we’re staying alert,” a Korea Tour Net representative explained.

Another travel agency, speaking anonymously, said they’ve received a few inquiries from tourists wanting updates, but all travel plans remain on track for now.

Safe Travel: Travelers, Stay Away from Crowded Areas!

All in all, everything is back to normal in South Korea after the 2024 martial law was lifted. So you don’t need to worry.

Still, we would like to suggest that you avoid areas surrounding the National Assembly in Yeongdeungpo District, Seoul. Also, when you’re out in public, keep yourself aware of the surroundings and follow all the safety precautions.

Also, stay away from crowded areas.
