Haebangchon Sinheung Market, a historic market, offers a unique shopping and dining experience, with traditional and modern shops.

There is something special about the Haebangchon Sinheung Market and Haebangchon Village. It has a rich cultural history because of its proximity to the US army base. While it was home to North Korean refugees originally, now it is home to expats from around the world.

Why Visit Haebangchon Sinheung Market?

  • An eclectic mix of trendy bars and cafes blended with the charm of traditional Korean market.
  • Amazing views of city from some restaurants like VinVin.
  • A global tourist hotspot so why should you miss out!

Haebangchon Village

While the market is great to explore, the village, nestled on the steep slopes of Namsan Mountain in Seoul, is a thriving multicultural district. There is 108 Staircase, trendy Sinheung Market, a Presbyterian Church, and more for you to explore.

Huamdong 108 Steps / 108 Staircase

During the Japanese colonial period, Haebangchon was home to a controversial shrine similar to the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo. Built in 1943, this shrine was intended to console the souls of Japanese soldiers who died during the Pacific War.

Located on the slopes of Namsan mountain, the shrine was dismantled following Korea’s liberation in 1945. However, the 108 staircase that led to the shrine remains as a historical marker. Today, an elevator runs alongside the staircase, providing convenient access to the area.

The presence of the staircase serves as a reminder of the region’s past and the impact of Japanese colonialism. It’s a poignant reminder of a dark chapter in Korean history.

Sinheung (Shinheung) Market

Haebangchon Shinheung Market has been around since 70 years and it’s a perfect blend of old and new where people can come together irrespective of their culture or nationality. Following Korea’s liberation in 1953, it adopted its current name, symbolizing a new beginning.

Haebang Presbyterian Church

The Haebangchon Church stands tall as a prominent landmark on the main street of the upper section of Haebangchon. Its steeple is visible from various parts of Seoul, serving as a beacon of hope and community.

Founded in 1947 by North Korean Christians who had settled in the area, the church initially held services in a tent. Over time, the congregation grew, leading to the construction of the present-day church building.

Tips for making the best of your trip

  • even in the off-peak hours, its best to call ahead to the restaurant where you are planning to dine as there is limited seating.
