Located in the Gangneung Coastal Cluster, the venue is the first and only place in South Korea specifically designed and built for ice hockey. Gangneung Hockey Centre is inside Gangneung Olympic Park, where the Gangneung Curling Centre is also located.

Initially, a traditional archery range was built on an old landfill site that offers a sweeping view of Gyeongpoho Lake and the East Sea. It has two Olympic-size rinks (60×30 meters) in the Main Venue and the Practice Arena. On the other hand, the National Hockey League (NHL) uses smaller ice rinks (56×27 meters) for greater immersion.
